This is so exciting I thought it well worth while coming back to blogging after a bit of a break. Everten, an Australian home goods and kitchenware company I often shop from, recently offered me a free product to review for free and I chose this baby – how lucky am I?! So I promptly made a[read more…]
I love this time of year. On a walk today;
I’ve been waiting for Channel 7’s two part mini series Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next door, watched the first part on Sunday night and loved it! It was full of energy, beautifully and sensitively filmed with brilliant casting, catchy vintage tunes and genuinely funny, touching scenes, all ultimately showing the lovely fellow we always knew Peter[read more…]
I’ve always loved this song; despite being released in 2003, it has that 90s Aussie backpacker in London feel, for me at least. The Waifs are on tour around Australia at the moment – check their website for details. Image of album ‘Beautiful You’ via: Readings
Some more photos from GOMA a while back of Indigenous Australian Art and a Japanese exhibition of art after 1989.
Being young in the 90s and a film buff, I’m a massive David Lynch fan and have watched most of his movies (including Eraserhead which I saw at the Old Dendy back in the day when it was a cool, studenty cinema which you had to walk up a dark, unpopulated street to get to, and[read more…]
Golden syrup is my favourite syrup out of all the syrups. I mean I love maple syrup, treacle and honey and I know they’re probably way healthier (I don’t even really know how golden syrup is made!) but golden syrup is so thick and luscious with a sweet flavour which is difficult to explain, it actually tastes[read more…]
The Byron Bay Cookie Company giveaway has now closed and out of 171 entries (156 post entries + 15 email entries), the winner has been selected by random and contacted. Congratulations Merryl from New South Wales! Thank you to everyone who entered and for such creative answers.
Woop! This is an awesome giveaway you guys. Byron Bay Cookie Company make the most wonderful gourmet cookies which I’ve been buying for years and house three brands; Byron Bay Cookies, Falwasser Crispbreads and Luken & May Biscuits. They are an Australian company situated in Byron Bay who produce and sell a huge variety of these award winning cookies; they also[read more…]
Remember being frightened as a kid of monsters under the bed or the boogeyman? Well The Babadook is so much scarier than that! Brilliantly executed in a stark, genuinely creepy way, this old-school psychological horror movie about a widow and her difficult relationship with her troubled son reminded me of Tim Burton, the Exorcist and the Haunting (1963) all at once, but in[read more…]
I love me some Lush so here are a few of my favourite things in the store currently; Some pretty Christmas presents for a special person maybe?
As most Australians know by now, At the Movies is ending on 9th December (for ever! Can’t believe it). As an enthusiastic movie buff, I’m actually really gloomy about this (not to mention the hammering ABC is copping re: funding cuts!). I’ve been watching Margaret and David and their friendly banter, disagreements and movie prowess for[read more…]
This man-made wetland down the road from us is a lovely little calm hideaway right in the middle of our suburb. With friendly quacking ducks, birds, butterflies and greenery and featuring a boardwalk, I love wondering down there, taking photos and just sitting in the sun. If anyone lives near me, it’s a sweet little place! [read more…]
I’m really enjoying the new ABC historical drama series ANZAC Girls, based on true stories from war nurses’ experiences at Gallipoli and depicting a group of Australian and New Zealand nurses in WWI, their war work and personal lives. As an ex-registered nurse I still love watching anything nurse related and this is so out of the realm of my reality it’s[read more…]
Haha! This made me laugh when I saw it on Orange is the New Black the other day. Happy Friday all. Image via Video from
I’m really looking forward to watching Carlotta this Thursday. The ABC TV movie spans the early formative and difficult years of Les Girls Cabaret female impersonator, then transgender pioneer Carlotta through the socially turbulent 1960s and 70s in Kings Cross, Sydney. The role of Carlotta is played by Jessica Marais of Love Child (another great TV production this year!). Carlotta is[read more…]
I just love this store based in northern NSW I’ve recently discovered, which features carefully chosen pieces such as wallpaper, cosy throws, cushions and bed linen as well as gorgeous 1940s/50s inspired women’s wear. The thing I love about small business owners such as this one (and Etsy comes to mind), is the attention to detail; the friendly[read more…]
I love this coming-of-age show so much. It resonates with me, growing up in northern NSW in the 80s, but is also cleverly and beautifully written, acted and filmed (some scenes genuinely hit so close to home, I feel the writers are in my head somehow). It also has that weirdly Australian quality of making you laugh, cry[read more…]
Well we all have those don’t we? I received a lovely surprise for Easter recently; some gorgeous, handmade chocolates from Chocolate Moments, our only Belgian chocolatier in Brisbane. Featuring flavoured truffles, fudge and the best salted caramel chocolate I’ve ever eaten, this chocolate paradise, owned by Gerrard Gosens, boasts 2 stores in our city as well[read more…]
Tim Tams. Are they available in lots of other countries other than Australia? You’re missing out if they’re not! Tim Tams have gotten me through many a break-up and Swotvac week in my teens and 20s and I’ll always be fond of them. There are all sorts of fancy flavours these days but my favourite is the[read more…]
I saw a cover of this on Love Child last night and wanted to listen to the original. Brilliant. Image of album cover, Nancy Sinatra via: CD and LP Video belongs to: weissebrauen
This song by 90s band Deadstar brings back so many memories. Happy Friday.
Can’t wait to see this! I grew up with INXS, like a lot of Gen Xers and will sadly always remember the day Michael died (you know you’re getting on a bit when you start saying things like, I remember when such and such died). Youtube video from: INXSVEVO Images from TV series: INXS: Never Tear Us Apart,[read more…]
So I knocked together some toasted muesli (or granola if you prefer), with lovely spices and chewy dried cherries.
It’s Australia Day here in our beautiful country. Stay safe and happy everyone. (One of my old film photos of Sea World)
In honour of Australia Day on Sunday, 26th January 2014, I thought I’d make two Australian traditional baked goods in one; lamingtons and butterfly cakes. These soft little cakes are filled with thick cream and sweet jam and topped with fudgy chocolate icing and flakes of coconut. I’m not sure if lamingtons are just one of[read more…]
I don’t know who decided soft, white bread with lashings of butter and 100s & 1000s sprinkled over tasted good but there you go, it does. I, like a lot of Aussie kids, grew up with this sweet snack for morning teas and birthday parties. They’re perfect if you have kids or have small friends visiting as[read more…]
I love this very British, whimsical song by Paul McCartney, check out the lyrics: Would you care to sit with me For a cup of English tea Very twee, very me Any sunny morning What a pleasure it would be Chatting so delightfully Nanny bakes fairy cakes Every Sunday morning Miles and miles of English garden,[read more…]
Well I have to say this was the blog highlight of my (almost) summer; being asked by Alice from Keep Left to taste test ice cream, no way! It’s a tough gig but someone has to do it. Harry’s Ice Cream Co are a small company based in Brunswick, Melbourne who make creamy, luscious[read more…]
Sarah from Keep Left recently contacted me to ask if I might be interested in supporting Ski Yoghurt for Breast Cancer Awareness month this October. Ski Yoghurt has pledged to donate $350,000 to fund a McGrath Breast Care Nurse and have turned a selection of their 1kg tubs of yoghurt the colour pink for a limited[read more…]
