It Follows (2015)

It Follows (2015)

Eeep.  Saw this brilliant low budget, indie horror flick a while back and loved it’s dreamlike quality and creepiness while paying homage to a bunch of 80s horror movies (spotted some subtle Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween and Carrie in there). Have a great weekend! All images from the movie: It Follows, USA, 2015

Easter mini carrot layer cake with cream cheese icing

Easter mini carrot layer cake with cream cheese icing

Carrot cake always reminds me of the uni refect, 2nd year.  The vegetarian café I’d often go to served the best carrot cake with lashings of cream cheese icing and good coffee.  I’d kid myself that carrot cake was good for me, what with all the carrots and walnuts and things. However.  After stacking on 10kg, I realised all that carrot[read more…]

A tribute to Wes

A tribute to Wes

My adolescence wouldn’t have been the same without sleepovers with my friends and Wes Craven’s awesome movies. Thanks for the screams Wes. Images from and belong to Wes Craven films: Scream, 1996 Nightmare on Elm Street, 1984 The People Under the Stairs, 1991 The Last House on the Left, 1972 The Hills have Eyes, 1977 Scream, 1996[read more…]

Happy Friday

Happy Friday

I found some random photos of celebs this week.  Check out Robin Williams below as a lad!  It broke my heart into a million tiny pieces seeing him so young and cheeky.  Also, 15 year old Judd Apatow with Jerry Seinfeld (!) – history made eh? Have a great weekend all. All photos via: this is not porn[read more…]

London – The Modern Babylon (2012)

If you have a chance, check out this brilliant British documentary (I caught the last half of it recently and would love to see the whole thing if I can get a hold of it). Packed with iconic music, images and social and political events throughout London’s diverse and fascinating history, it looks at[read more…]

Happy Friday (and Glastonbury the Movie)

Happy Friday (and Glastonbury the Movie)

I spotted this trailer for Glastonbury the Movie in Flashback recently (initial release in 1996 and re-released in 2012 with extra footage) and it looks brilliant.  As the official site says, this is old school early 90s Glastonbury, before mobile phones and social networking, when it was all about the music. Fun times for those who were there!  Have[read more…]

A look back at the 70s – Fleetwood Mac

A look back at the 70s – Fleetwood Mac

I love this band so much!  A bit before my time but I remember my dad playing them on our car stereo when I was a kid.  Plus, I adore Stevie Nicks, her style, clothes, 1970s bohemian life, everything. Happy Friday, peace love & mung beans all Images via: here and here

Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now

Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now

I LOVE this scene from the beautiful movie, The Skeleton Twins, it’s so awesome (I find it incredibly difficult not to sing along to it – child of the 80s alert).  And here’s gorgeous Kristen Wiig’s last show send-off on SNL. 1990s playlist

Oh yeah the 90s!  Talk about overdosing on nostalgia. My uni days; an era in music which personified alternative/indie, boy bands, grunge, angry chick songs and dance music, this will always be my favourite decade because, well, let’s face it, it was the last true iconic, or at least, easily recognisable era.  So if you want to check out my mega[read more…]

Salinger

Salinger

I always feel like a cliché saying The Catcher in the Rye is one of my favourite novels as a gen Xer, however I truly did love this novel when I read it at school and the several times I read it until I was around 20.  I tried reading it a few years ago and while I[read more…]

Freaks and Geeks

Freaks and Geeks

Does anyone remember this late 90s show?  It was way ahead of its time, yet seriously underrated, which is probably why it only ever lasted one season.  I love revisiting old shows and watching this now makes me realise how funny and heart warming, yet dark it was.  The writing, comedic timing, characters and storylines were subtle and insightful and practically everybody was in it!  Much like[read more…]

Puberty Blues s2 catch up

Puberty Blues s2 catch up

I love this coming-of-age show so much.  It resonates with me, growing up in northern NSW in the 80s, but is also cleverly and beautifully written, acted and filmed (some scenes genuinely hit so close to home, I feel the writers are in my head somehow).  It also has that weirdly Australian quality of making you laugh, cry[read more…]

The Graduate

The Graduate

The Graduate is in my top 5 list of favourite movies ever; a classic which, for some reason, resonated with me when I first saw it at age 12 (maybe the fact that I stayed up late watching it on TV when I was supposed to be in bed).  I’ve seen it heaps of times[read more…]

The 80s!  The era of the power ballad, rock, girl bands, punk and pop music.  The era of sitting around endlessly discussing Morrissey, the Pixies and Joy Division with our mates but then going home and secretly dancing in our bedrooms to Wham! or pretending we were Whitney Houston or Madonna.  And who hasn’t sung along really super loudly to Bon[read more…]

Although I was only a babe at the time, I love anything 1970s and the music is the best bit. So the other night I stayed up until the early hours and created a 1970s music collection; it was so much fun, the time just flew by.  I’ve managed to capture early new wave, disco,[read more…]

Rear Window

Rear Window

I’ve always had a thing for Alfred Hitchcock films – like a lot of people, I think he was a genius.  I remember first watching Rear Window, along with another classic, Psycho, when I was around 18 or so and I was hooked, completely freaked out by the creepy storylines and fascinated by Rear Window’s[read more…]

Fairy bread nostalgia

Fairy bread nostalgia

I don’t know who decided soft, white bread with lashings of butter and 100s & 1000s sprinkled over tasted good but there you go, it does.  I, like a lot of Aussie kids, grew up with this sweet snack for morning teas and birthday parties.  They’re perfect if you have kids or have small friends visiting as[read more…]

The Americans

The Americans

I’m really enjoying this series.  Like any child of the 80s, I grew up learning about cold war politics and still find it fascinating. The Americans, set in 1981 USA, stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys depicting undercover soviet agents masquerading as a seemingly normal, suburban American family.  With it’s references to the KGB and FBI, loyalty to the[read more…]

Indoor plants for interiors

Indoor plants for interiors

I grew up with a mother obsessed with indoor house plants and gardening in general .. our home (inside and out) was filled with lush, bohemian greenery, macramé holders, potted maidenhair ferns (remember those? They’re so pretty and frothy looking) and leafy vines dripping luxuriously down bookcases and such.  Then I moved out of home and gradually over the years it[read more…]

Ridin’ along on my pushbike, honey

The very best, most favourite present I ever received was for Christmas when I was around 11 years old, and my parents gave me a gold 12 speed bicycle (gold.  I was heaps cool), after what seemed like years of begging (to my 11 year old self anyway, it was probably 6 months).  I loved[read more…]

Halloween spookiness

Halloween spookiness

We don’t really celebrate Halloween so much here in Australia, although I think in some parts kids might do a bit of dressing up and foraging for sweets and treats and such. Puberty Blues (series 2012)

I watched the first episode of this massively nostalgic, late 1970s era, suburban coming-of-age series last night and loved it.  I remember Kathy Lette’s novel and the movie from the 80s when I was in high school and as soon as I saw Claudia Karvan was involved in the TV adaptation, I knew it would be a[read more…]

I don’t often go into personal things on my blog but thought I’d share something today: Walking past this framed photo on my hallway desk of my late mum (on the right) and aunt Suzie when they were young makes me both sad and smiley at the same time.
