Lucky me! I just received a pack from Carman’s new range of Café Granola in macadamia, red apple & plum flavour to try. I scarfed down a big bowl of this right away with cold milk and a chopped apple and it was delicious; just the right amount of sweetness with crunchy oats and nuts, chewy dried fruit and[read more…]
I’ve been waiting for Channel 7’s two part mini series Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next door, watched the first part on Sunday night and loved it! It was full of energy, beautifully and sensitively filmed with brilliant casting, catchy vintage tunes and genuinely funny, touching scenes, all ultimately showing the lovely fellow we always knew Peter[read more…]
I’ve always loved this song; despite being released in 2003, it has that 90s Aussie backpacker in London feel, for me at least. The Waifs are on tour around Australia at the moment – check their website for details. Image of album ‘Beautiful You’ via: Readings
Some more photos from GOMA a while back of Indigenous Australian Art and a Japanese exhibition of art after 1989.
Being young in the 90s and a film buff, I’m a massive David Lynch fan and have watched most of his movies (including Eraserhead which I saw at the Old Dendy back in the day when it was a cool, studenty cinema which you had to walk up a dark, unpopulated street to get to, and[read more…]
Golden syrup is my favourite syrup out of all the syrups. I mean I love maple syrup, treacle and honey and I know they’re probably way healthier (I don’t even really know how golden syrup is made!) but golden syrup is so thick and luscious with a sweet flavour which is difficult to explain, it actually tastes[read more…]
So, here are some intriguing Australian shows to keep an eye out for this year: The Secret River (ABC); A TV adaptation of Kate Grenville’s novel, this 2 part dramatic miniseries follows the story of a convict and his wife who are sent to the penal colony of NSW in the 1800s. The ugly conflict stemming[read more…]

I love this – what a beautiful sentiment. Here’s hoping for a resolution soon for those folks at Martin Place. Update 16.12.14: my thoughts are with those hostages who died and were injured today, what a sad day for Australia.
Some movie trailers which look interesting if you feel like having a gander! (Top image is a scan from an old postcard; trailers are official movie trailers from YouTube)
Woop! This is an awesome giveaway you guys. Byron Bay Cookie Company make the most wonderful gourmet cookies which I’ve been buying for years and house three brands; Byron Bay Cookies, Falwasser Crispbreads and Luken & May Biscuits. They are an Australian company situated in Byron Bay who produce and sell a huge variety of these award winning cookies; they also[read more…]
Remember being frightened as a kid of monsters under the bed or the boogeyman? Well The Babadook is so much scarier than that! Brilliantly executed in a stark, genuinely creepy way, this old-school psychological horror movie about a widow and her difficult relationship with her troubled son reminded me of Tim Burton, the Exorcist and the Haunting (1963) all at once, but in[read more…]
I love me some Lush so here are a few of my favourite things in the store currently; Some pretty Christmas presents for a special person maybe?
As most Australians know by now, At the Movies is ending on 9th December (for ever! Can’t believe it). As an enthusiastic movie buff, I’m actually really gloomy about this (not to mention the hammering ABC is copping re: funding cuts!). I’ve been watching Margaret and David and their friendly banter, disagreements and movie prowess for[read more…]
How sweet are these dresses! So nice and flirty for our impending spring I think, with some adorable shades to go with. Spotted via Daydream Lily and more can be seen online at their vintage boutique store; they are true vintage though, so there’s only one of each. Click on the images to get to the original source/page.[read more…]
This man-made wetland down the road from us is a lovely little calm hideaway right in the middle of our suburb. With friendly quacking ducks, birds, butterflies and greenery and featuring a boardwalk, I love wondering down there, taking photos and just sitting in the sun. If anyone lives near me, it’s a sweet little place! [read more…]
I’m really enjoying the new ABC historical drama series ANZAC Girls, based on true stories from war nurses’ experiences at Gallipoli and depicting a group of Australian and New Zealand nurses in WWI, their war work and personal lives. As an ex-registered nurse I still love watching anything nurse related and this is so out of the realm of my reality it’s[read more…]
Haha! This made me laugh when I saw it on Orange is the New Black the other day. Happy Friday all. Image via Video from
Recently I received an email from Denis, the owner of Bezalel Art, an Etsy store based in Victoria which specialises in hand-made, beautifully embossed rolling pins. So lucky me I got to trial one! Bezalel has a lot of different patterns to choose from and you can even customise your own rolling pin. I decided to[read more…]
I’m really looking forward to watching Carlotta this Thursday. The ABC TV movie spans the early formative and difficult years of Les Girls Cabaret female impersonator, then transgender pioneer Carlotta through the socially turbulent 1960s and 70s in Kings Cross, Sydney. The role of Carlotta is played by Jessica Marais of Love Child (another great TV production this year!). Carlotta is[read more…]
I just love this store based in northern NSW I’ve recently discovered, which features carefully chosen pieces such as wallpaper, cosy throws, cushions and bed linen as well as gorgeous 1940s/50s inspired women’s wear. The thing I love about small business owners such as this one (and Etsy comes to mind), is the attention to detail; the friendly[read more…]
Yikes. It’s times like these I’d like to move to another country (or the Mars mission, is that still happening? Sign me up!) .. Tony Abbott – Last Week Tonight by Syd07
It’s no secret on my blog that I love teatime. Cosy pots of tea, scones, cake and someone lovely to share it with. Sarah from Keep Left recently contacted me to participate in Bakers Delight’s new campaign to celebrate 2 new scone flavours; orange poppy seed and orange chocolate chip scones, only in store for a limited[read more…]
Here are some lovely vintage style sheets and a throw blanket I purchased recently. The rosebank sheets and the aran hand knitted throw are both by design label Lazybones, who are based in the Byron Bay hinterland. Also, you know when you buy a sheet set and sometimes the fitted lower sheet or pillow cases are too small? These were a[read more…]
Some very nice things in my Etsy favourites (a few from one of my new favourite stores: Found By Her, a vintage store in Brisbane for a change). See my list for the owners of the images/stores. Update: as you can see in the comments section, Jay from Found By Her has very generously offered readers 10% off any purchase[read more…]
I love this coming-of-age show so much. It resonates with me, growing up in northern NSW in the 80s, but is also cleverly and beautifully written, acted and filmed (some scenes genuinely hit so close to home, I feel the writers are in my head somehow). It also has that weirdly Australian quality of making you laugh, cry[read more…]
Well we all have those don’t we? I received a lovely surprise for Easter recently; some gorgeous, handmade chocolates from Chocolate Moments, our only Belgian chocolatier in Brisbane. Featuring flavoured truffles, fudge and the best salted caramel chocolate I’ve ever eaten, this chocolate paradise, owned by Gerrard Gosens, boasts 2 stores in our city as well[read more…]
Tim Tams. Are they available in lots of other countries other than Australia? You’re missing out if they’re not! Tim Tams have gotten me through many a break-up and Swotvac week in my teens and 20s and I’ll always be fond of them. There are all sorts of fancy flavours these days but my favourite is the[read more…]
I saw a cover of this on Love Child last night and wanted to listen to the original. Brilliant. Image of album cover, Nancy Sinatra via: CD and LP Video belongs to: weissebrauen
